Planning a holiday to Thailand? Whether you’re visiting for a beach escape in Phuket, a cultural journey in Chiang Mai or an island-hopping adventure across Koh Samui and Krabi, it’s important to understand Thailand’s visa and entry requirements before you travel. The good news is that for most Australian passport holders, entering Thailand is simple and straightforward.
Thailand Visa and Entry Requirements
What do Australians need to enter Thailand?
To enter Thailand, we recommend Australians hold a valid passport with at least six months’ validity from the date of return. You’ll also need a confirmed onward or return flight and proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay. Upon arrival, Thai Immigration may request these details, so it’s a good idea to have them ready.
Most Australians visiting for tourism can enter Thailand visa-free under the visa exemption program, allowing stays of up to 30 days if arriving by air or 15 days if arriving by land from a neighbouring country. Longer stays may require a tourist visa to be obtained before travel from the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate. For more information and to stay up to date with travel requirements, check Sherpa.
Do Australians need a digital arrival card for Thailand?
As of 2024, Thailand no longer requires foreign travellers, including Australians, to complete the TM6 paper arrival card upon entry. However, always check Sherpa for the latest updates before departure, as entry procedures can change.
You will still go through standard immigration and customs checks on arrival. Travellers are encouraged to complete any digital health or customs forms if requested by airlines or Thai authorities.
Do I need a visa to travel to Thailand from Australia?
For short holidays, Australians do not need a visa to enter Thailand for up to 30 days under the visa exemption program. If you plan to stay longer, such as for work, study or extended travel, you’ll need to apply for the appropriate Thai visa before departure.
Always ensure your passport, visa and travel documents meet current Thai immigration rules to avoid delays on arrival.
